Ala Ud-din Ahmed,
Mirpur Law College
ln the year 1993 some elite legal professionals of Dhaka City established an institution for legal education under the name and style “Mirpur Law College, Dhaka” at Mirpur. lt is a full-fledged law college and has duly been affiliated to and recognized by the National University of Bangladesh. This college was founded on the private initiative of the local elite persons of Mirpur area, Specially under the patronage of late Alhaj Fakir Safir Uddin Ahmed who was the 1st Chairman of the Organizing Governing Body of the College.
There were almost all categories of educational institutions including vocational as well as commercial institutions in Mirpur area except institution for legal education which was the long cherished common demand of the common people including intellectuals of the said area. Mr. Abu Naser Md. Waheed was the 1st founder Principal of the College and after his retirement Mr. Md. Mamataz Uddin Served as Principal of the College till May-2008. Mr. Md. Anisuzzaman was the Principal from 1st June-2008 To 19-01-2015
Mr. Ala ud-din Ahmed Now has been functioning as Principal (In Charge) of the College with modesty and dignity since January-2015. Last of all under the collective affords of all including the respected teachers of the College Mirpur Law College has come to existence in the year as aforesaid. It is, however, quite true to say that the teacher of the college including the Principal (In Charge) have played very vital role in establishing this Law College.
All the teachers of the college are sincere and energetic having due academic qualification in the field of legal education. At the initial stage of the college all the teachers including the principal (In Charge) had to render their services without any remuneration, otherwise it might not be possible to start the college and come to the present form. However, Mirpur Law College is now a well established Law College with full discipline and decorum and it is our proud privilege to note that the College has been running under the supervision of a strong and regular Governing Body headed by it’s Chairman Mr. Nirmal Chandra Paul (Retired Judge)
Prior to the constitution of the present Governing Body of the College, in the previous Governing Body Mr. Justice A.M. Mahmudur Rahman and Mr. Justice B.B. Roy Chowdhury were the Chairman of the college Governing Body. Mirpur Law College started its academic activities in a hired building namely Mirpur Shaheed Smriti High school located at Mirpur, Section-6, nearer No.11 Bus Stand Mirpur from 1st July, 1993 and since then the college has successfully been continuing its academic activities keeping high stand and in all respect. In the year 1996 we had to shift the college from Shaheed Smriti High School to Adarsha High School located at Section-10, Mirpur. Again in 2008 the college was shifted to Sheikh Fazilatun Nessa Islamic women Degree College Building, Section-2, Mirpur for special difficulties and lastly in 2011 the Mirpur Law College has been shifted to Mirpur Shaheed Smriti High School again situated at nearer to No. 11 Bus Stand, Mirpur and now the academic activities is running in full swing with the aid of local people and the Managing Committee of the said School as well. The number of students has been increasing day by day. The result of the college is remarkable. It appears from the result of LL.B Final year 2012 that 96.15% students have passed among them 46 students got 2nd class and the College secured the 1st place in order of merit. Still today the law courses are of two years and first part i.e Part-I consists of 7 papers while 2nd part i.e Part-II consists of 8 Papers of one hundred marks each.
Classes are held regularly from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. every working day. Holidays are followed as per approved list of the University. It may be noted that Mirpur Law College is the only law College in the City of Dhaka wherein the internal Annual Examination is being held at the end of the session aiming at making the students fully alert and prepared for the ensuing University Examinations. It may be cited that though some private Universities have started to teach law (2 years course) in Mirpur area yet the Mirpur Law College has been maintaining it’s standard and dignity in expanding legal education in the area. All most all the Advocates who are practicing in Dhaka hailing from Mirpur are the students of Mirpur Law College. Many Army Officers, Neval Officers, Air Force Officers, Police Officers and Civil Officials obtained LL.B. degree from this college and after their retirement started law practice and by this time they have became good lawyers in the court of law.
The Teachers of the college take special interest to solve academic problems if any, to be faced by any of the regular students. The college does not indulge in any activities subversive to the college or of discipline. It is free from all sorts of politics. All the students who are regular in classes are equally favored by the teachers.
